A chemical peel is a treatment in which an acid solution is used to remove the damaged outer layers of the skin. A chemical peel enhances and smoothes the texture of the skin. It is an effective treatment for facial blemishes, wrinkles, and uneven skin pigmentation. Varying strengths of chemical peels are available and the appropriate peel for each patient will be selected depending on skin type, desired results, and length of recovery time.
A glycolic acid peel is a light chemical peel that is used to treat fine wrinkling, areas of dryness, uneven pigmentation, and acne. The glycolic solution used for light chemical peels is comprised of alpha-hydroxy acids. Light chemical peels are ideal for people who want the benefits of a facial peel but do not wish to spend the time required to recover from a deeper peel. Glycolic acid peels are ideal for patients with mild sun damage, wrinkling, and scarring. Glycolic peels can also be used on patients with more extensive damage as a series of treatments over time to give the results of a deeper peel but with less recovery time. There is minimal redness and mild peeling for up to a week after a glycolic acid peel. Mild redness is easily covered with makeup and the patient can return to work immediately.

Jessner’s and TCA peels are medium depth peels designed to improve more extensive wrinkling, sun damage, uneven pigmentation, and acne.
A Jessner’s peel is made from a mixture of salicylic acid (a beta hydroxy acid), lactic acid (an alpha hydroxy acid) and resorcinol. This is the lighter of the two medium peels and is often used alone or sometimes as a pre-treatment to a TCA peel. A Jessner’s peel is meant for moderate sun damage, pigmentation, wrinkling, and acne scarring. There is commonly redness of the skin for 2-3 days and then peeling like a sunburn for 2-3 days. Patients can often return to work and apply makeup in 5-7 days.
A TCA peel is composed of varying percentages of Trichloroacetic acid. This is the deeper of the two medium depth chemical peels. A TCA peel is meant for moderate to severe sun damage, pigmentation, wrinkling, and acne scarring. TCA peels are the peel of choice for darker pigmented skin tones. There is commonly moderate swelling and crusting of the skin for about a week, peeling can be expected for up to two weeks. Patients can often return to work and apply makeup in 7-10 days.
