Do you look in the mirror and see a stranger looking back? That person looks old and tired. You certainly don’t feel old and tired. Sure, you’ve heard of facial rejuvenation treatments, but it all sounds so clinical and painful. You’d rather be pampered and relaxed, not feel like you’re at the hospital.
Luckily, you can have the best of both worlds – medical grade treatments and in the luxurious spa atmosphere. There are several procedures you can expect from a med spa to take years off your face while you soak up the relaxing ambiance.
A popular facial rejuvenation treatment that is non-surgical is microdermabrasion. This procedure is used for reducing the lines around the eyes, mouth and brow. It is also great for reducing the appearance of discolorations and acne scars. As the microdermabrasion wand is run over the skin, crystals spray from the wand and, for lack of a better word, pelt the skin. It polishes the skin and the wand vacuums up the dead skin scraped off by the crystals.
Only the areas needing attention are targeted and small areas can be addressed at a time. Generally, it takes several treatments to start seeing the results you want because microdermabrasion gently removes one layer of skin at a time. Now, there is some pain, but it is minimal compared to other facial rejuvenation treatments.
Another facial rejuvenation treatment offered in a med spa is laser skin resurfacing. There are a variety of lasers that can be used, but the gist of the process is that a laser targets a specific area and vaporizes the skin to expose the fresh new skin underneath.
If this sounds painful, don’t worry. A local anesthetic is used to numb the area. This treatment is more aggressive than microdermabrasion at treating lines, discolorations and acne scars. But, it also requires fewer treatments to get the desired results.
Ok, these procedures don’t sound very relaxing do they? But, in a medical spa, they do their very best to make you feel pampered and relaxed. Dim lighting, warm colored walls and even some relaxing music are often part of the atmosphere.
Prior to the procedure, you may receive a facial massage to relax you while aromatherapy scents waft through the room and you snuggle under a soft warm blanket. All of this is for your benefit and it really helps distract from the giant piece of medical equipment and bed in the middle of the room.
If you do seek out a medical spa instead of a medical clinic, make sure you check out the credentials of the nurses, doctors and estheticians. A certified surgeon should perform the laser skin resurfacing because this is essentially a surgical procedure with the use of anesthesia. A physician or a licensed esthetician can perform microdermabrasion.
Verify that both doctor and esthetician are certified and licensed to perform facial rejuvenation treatments. While no one is cutting you with a scalpel, these procedures can cause serious problems if done incorrectly. Discoloration, numbness and infection are all possible risks.
Make sure the staff is experienced in these procedures and that the medical spa is prepared to handle possible emergencies. If done correctly, these procedures can take years off of your face and you can have a nice experience while you are at it.
