I recently had a Dermaplaning “manual exfoliation” treatment done. As your Beauty Expert I wanted to share my experience with you…
First, lets start with the most important question, “What is Dermaplaning?” According to SkinInc.com, “Dermaplaning is a simple, safe and non-invasive procedure for exfoliating the epidermis and ridding the skin of fine vellus hair (peach fuzz). It has been used for many years, but many estheticians don’t even know it exists, and certainly, many don’t use it.”
Who may have this treatment done and what are the benefits? Dermaplaning currently has no negative effects. It has become extremely popular in Medi-Spas cross country and comes specifically from California and North Carolina . How is this treatment done? A scalpel is delicately used to wear away the surface of the epidermis, using delicate feathering movements. Benefits include the appearance of reduced deep “pit-like” acne scarsto produce a more even, smooth complexion. Dermaplaning is very similar to dermabrasion, but it is also different in many ways. Dermabrasion helps to reduce the look of fine scars and wrinkles, but dermaplaning is meant to treat much smaller, but much deeper scars that can come from having cystic acne. There are gentler methods of dermaplaning that are occasionally used to exfoliate or as hair removal treatments.
According to Pureskinjunkie.com, all skin types can benefit from Dermaplaning, however, an acne skin type and an excessively oily skin type would not be favorable for this treatment. SkinInc.com, claims that “This is a great treatment to offer to patients who are pregnant or nursing who want a deep exfoliation, but are not allowed to use peeling agents on their skin because of the risk that the chemicals will be absorbed into the blood stream, and may be transferred to the fetus or the child. It is also a first choice for patients who have excess fine hair on the skin. Fine hair often causes a buildup of dirt and oils in the follicles, so removing the hair gives the patient healthier looking skin.”
My Dermaplaning treatment took nearly 45 minutes and my hands were also “bladed” in my session. It was recommended that I return every 3-4 weeks for maximum effects. I was very impressed with how bright my skin looked and am looking forward to my next treatment.
