Chemical peels are an easy, affordable way to keep your skin looking its best. Chemical peels remove damaged outer layers of skin to smooth texture, reduce scarring and remove blemishes and pre-cancerous growths to produce healthy, glowing skin. We recommend peels to any patient who is looking to kick-start a new skin care regimen, prolong results after a procedure, or simply maintain their healthy skin. Chemical peels are divided into 3 categories according to the depth of the peel. Light peels require minimal downtime and exfoliate the top layer of skin cells, revealing a brighter, smoother complexion. Superficial peels include glycolic acid, salicylic acid and Jessner’s solution. In general, the more superficial the peel, the lower the risk of complications but also the more superficial the correction. Medium depth peels use a combination of Jessner’s solution and 35% trichloracetic acid. For patients with severe sun damage and an increased number of brown spots and fine lines, a medium depth peel is required. Deeper peels require more downtime, but are an excellent procedure for improving pigmentation, fine lines, texture and tone.
It’s important to note that chemical peels actually stimulate your own natural collagen production, thereby providing long term benefits. At Sand Lake Dermatology, we have assembled an exceptional menu of peels featuring only the most advanced technology and medical grade product lines.

The glycolic peel is one of the most commonly used chemical peels today. A chemical solution with glycolic acid is applied to your skin. The skin treatment causes your outer layer of skin to slough, revealing fresh and regenerated skin. Rather than changing or damaging your skin, glycolic peels facilitate the process of removing dead skin cells. As a result, collagen and elastin production is stimulated which lead to healthy, young-looking skin. Glycolic peels can help you deal with acne, dry skin, wrinkles and sun damage. After using a glycolic peel, your skin is more sensitive to sunlight so it is advisable to stay indoors until the skin completely heals. It is recommended that glycolic peels be performed monthly until desired results are achieved.
A versatile peel and a favorite among dermatologists, the Jessner’s peel is a solution consisting of 14% lactic acid and 14% salicylic acid peeling agent with a resorcinol solvent. This is a strong chemical peel that is known for delivering great results. Besides being an excellent facial treatment, a Jessner’s peel can be used to lighten areas of hyperpigmentation and to treat acne, acne-scarring, photo damage and aging skin. Repeated coats of Jessner’s solution are applied to the skin until a white frost develops (usually takes 4-6 coats). A temporary stinging, burning and numbing sensation has been noted upon initial contact as well as minor skin sensitivity and light to moderate redness. After a few days, the top layer of skin will naturally flake or peel away, revealing clearer, smoother skin. A Jessner’s peel is a progressive treatment that will not provide a final result with one peel. It is recommended that Jessner’s peels be performed monthly until desired results are achieved.
Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peels are medium strength chemical peels that rejuvenate and repair your skin. TCA peels brighten and even out your skin tone by restoring sun-damaged cells, removing pre-cancerous areas and stimulating collagen formation for a healthier, younger looking complexion. Because of their deep exfoliating effects, TCA peels can clean out congested pores to refine the surface of your skin. TCA peels can be used on the face, neck or back of the hands. TCA peels cause your skin to physically peel, so they require approximately one week of downtime. For best results, it is recommended that TCA peels be performed monthly.
The salicylic acid peel is a state-of-the-art chemical peel that has revolutionized the tradition peel. This treatment is used primarily to reduce acne lesions and fade pores. The salicylic acid peel exfoliates dead and dull surface skin cells, stimulating a skin renewal and brining healthy, young, living cells to the surface. It is also able to penetrate skin follicles, making it a great option for the treatment of acne, acne scars, hyperpigmentation and enlarged pores. Skin may flake for approximately 3-5 days.
