Many men and women have the desire to reverse the signs of aging on their face. Most commonly used to enhance the texture and tone of the skin, a chemical peel uses a chemical solution to remove damaged outer layers of the skin.

A chemical peel restores wrinkled, blemished, unevenly pigmented or sun-damaged facial skin by using a chemical solution to peel away the top layer of damaged skin. Patients may choose from three chemical solutions including alphahydroxy acid (AHA), trichloroacetic acid (TCA) or phenol. Chemical solutions can be adjusted to fit your particular needs.
The solution is applied with a sponge cotton pad, swab or brush to the entire face or specific areas to achieve desired results. It is left on the face for a few minutes, neutralized and washed off. Peels may last between 15 minutes and two hours, depending upon the program chosen by your doctor and yourself.
Chemical peels are helpful for individuals with facial blemishes, mild acne scarring, uneven skin or fine wrinkles on the cheeks, forehead, around eyes and mouth. They work best for those with light hair and fair, thin skin with superficial wrinkles. Peels will not remove skin sagging or deep furrows.
Immediately after the solution has been applied, the skin may sting or tingle, but this should subside within the first couple of minutes. Side effects may vary according the strength of solution, but in general patients experience stinging, puffiness, redness or irritation.
