Rosacea makes skin very sensitive, which you’ve noticed! That said, I’m often able to help my rosacea patients find anti-aging skin care options and create an effective anti-aging skin care program that works with their rosacea. Gentle exfoliation with something like a Gentle Facial Buf Puf is one of the options I use for my rosacea patients. Because rosacea skin is so easily triggered it’s important to use only the gentlest pressure and a very mild cleanser with the Facial Buf Puf. I like the Buf Puf used in the morning so that a person can enjoy the bright, exfoliated skin texture during the day. My rosacea patients may only be able to use the Buf Puf twice a week, but that’s still a nice exfoliation to remove the dull dead cells.

I also have good luck treating most of my rosacea patients with tretinoin cream (Retin A Cream) as their primary anti-aging skin care product. In my experience, patients with rosacea are much more able to tolerate tretinoin cream than an acid pH product like AHA’s or vitamin C. I find that the trick to getting rosacea prone skin to tolerate the tretinoin cream is to use supportive products to calm the rosacea such as Replenix CF Cream or Green Tea Antioxidant Skin Therapy – Replenix Power of Three Cream, and Calming Zinc Soap (formerly Noble Zinc). I control the rosacea first for a few months then sneak up on their skin with the tretinoin cream. We start it once or twice a week and slowly advance to nightly. If the rosacea starts to flare up we stop the tretinoin, calm down the rosacea then resume. It’s not easy, but it is worth it because tretinoin cream has such wonderful anti-aging properties, which I’ve discussed in the past.

I also find that calming facials can help soothe rosacea prone skin into tolerating the gentle exfoliation with the Buf Puf and the tretinoin cream. The ideal interval between facials is every 6 weeks. The skin always looks great after a facial and it’s another way to keep rosacea prone skin looking its best. It’s important to find an aesthetician that understands what a calming facial is because some professional facial products can provoke rosacea.

Each patient’s skin is unique and I customize the approach based on what they can tolerate. Rosacea is easy to provoke and so there is no way to predict how a person will do. I of course can’t say if your skin would tolerate this anti aging options and I recommend that you see a dermatologist for specific recommendations and treatments.

Facial scrubs and/or exfoliating loufas are a daily essential not just for acne sufferers, but for all who wish to look after their skin. All day, every day our skin is shedding dead cells. Most of the time these dead skin cells do not are not completely disposed of and remain on the skin attracting bacteria and allowing a higher build-up of oil. Using a facial scrub ‘exfoliates the skin, clearing the dead cells and cleaning it from excess oil and dirt.

Some “all natural” treatments have been processed beyond recognition and I know that naturally occuring treatments are hard to find but it is still the best option I have found. Facial masques (like mud and cucumber masques) can rejuvenate the skin and keep it as healthy as possible. I purchase mine online in a bar form (i.e. in the shape of a soap bar). Crystal salt is easy to apply (just wet the bar and apply to skin), it is cheap to buy, and is 100% completely natural. Himalyan Crystal Salt has over 90 of the elements concentrated over 250million years. It works much like salt water does, by drying the skin and allowing it to absorb the nutrients. You may be wondering why this is such an effective treatment but think of any surfers or swimmers that you know. How many have acne? None. Salt is one of the most effective treatments against any infection and is an essential part of the human body. And by drying the skin (naturally) it prevents the development of further acne. You should apply it to affected areas anywhere on the body at least 2 times a day for the best results.

Medication should be avoided at all costs. You do not want to put antibiotics in your body unless you are extremely sick. Excessive use of antibiotics will reduce your bodys own production of antibiotics and make you more vulnerable to sickness and infection.

In my experience, it is best not to settle for a single treatment. A combination of treatments often returns the greatest results. I personally use Himalayan Crystal salt for the treatment of all acne all over my body and I use Proactiv Repairing lotion for the treatment of acne scars. Remember though, these treatments will not stop the acne and if you do not address the imbalance in your body, the damage can occur in other places. Your body will always try to eliminate toxins somehow and if you manage to treat the acne, it will come out somewhere else. You may put on weight or develop diseases. So by all means use treatments. But make sure they are your second line of attack.

Plus, it works on all complexions (unlike laser hair removal, which is best for an extremely specific skin tone and hair type) and takes only five to ten minutes—perfect for those who want smoother, brighter skin but are also too busy (or lazy!) to devote tons of time to beauty treatments. How is a chemical (face) peel performed?

Alphahydroxy acids (AHAs) or superficial peels

Such as glycolic, lactic, or fruit acids are the mildest of the peel formulas and produce light peels. These types of peels are performed by aesthetic skin care specialists and can provide smoother, brighter-looking skin. They are best if you can’t spare the time to recover from a phenol or TCA peel. AHA peels may be used to treat fine wrinkling, areas of dryness, uneven pigmentation and acne. Various concentrations of an AHA may be applied weekly or at longer intervals to obtain the best result. An alphahydroxy acid, such as glycolic acid, can also be mixed with a facial wash or cream in lesser concentrations as part of a daily skin-care regimen to improve the skin’s texture.

Trichloroacetic acid (TCA) peel, blue peel, or medium peel

Can be used in many concentrations, but it is most commonly used for medium-depth peeling to treat fine surface wrinkles, superficial blemishes and pigment problems. The results of TCA peel are usually less dramatic than and not as long-lasting as those of a phenol peel, and it may require more than one TCA peel to achieve the desired result. The recovery from a TCA peel is usually shorter than with a phenol peel.

Phenol or deep peel

Is the strongest of the chemical solutions and produces an intermediate or deep peel. It is used mainly to treat coarse facial wrinkles, areas of blotchy or damaged skin caused by sun exposure or pre-cancerous growths. Since phenol sometimes lightens the treated areas, your skin pigmentation may be a determining factor as to whether or not this is an appropriate treatment for you. Phenol is primarily used on the face; scarring may result if it’s applied to the neck or other body areas.

A chemical peel is a body treatment technique used to improve and smooth the texture of the facial skin using a chemical solution that causes the dead skin to slough off and eventually peel off. The regenerated skin is usually smoother, brighter and clearer.

Types

Alpha Hydroxy Acid Peels (AHAs)
Are natural occuring acids such as glycolic, lactic, citric, malic, tartaric etc Each are derived from nature such as sugar cane, sour milk, citrus fruits etc
These are superficial peels to help tarded minor imperfections such as dryness, uneven pigmentation and acne. They give a vibrancy and brightness to the skin.
They may cause a stinging, milkd redness and irritation and dryness.

Jessner Peels
These peels are a combination of 14% salicylcic acid, lactic acid and resorcinol. They are used to break down the skin further than an AHA peel, to eliminate acne, target fine lines and wrinkles, and lift pigmentation.
It is difficult to “overpeel” the skin due to mild percentages, but will give a noticeable result.
Visible peeling will occur in 3-4 days after the peel was performed.

Retinoic Acid Peel
This is a deeper peel than Jesser and AHA. It is only performed in a Physicians office to help remove acne scars, lift deeper pigmentation and rejuvenate the skin. It is usually performed in conjunction with a Jessner peel in the same appointment.
Peeling occurs in about 3 days following the treatment. For more dramatic changes to the skin, multiple treatments are required.

Trichloroacetic Acid Peels (TCA)
An intermediate to deep peel, ranging in percentage of 20-50%. They are used to smooth out fine surface wrinkles, remove superficial blemishes, correct skin pigmentation. Multiple treatments may be required. Peeling occurs on the 3rd day post treatment.

What does your training day cover?

Which exfoliating treatment is right for you?

For years men have reaped the benefit of shaving their face with wonderfully exfoliated skin, great texture and smooth appearance, here in Southwest Florida and North Carolina savvy women are following suit and replicating these benefits with a skin care treatment called dermaplaning.

Dermaplaning – also referred to as epidermal leveling, dermablading and blading – is a type of manual exfoliation of the skin that is typically offered in plastic surgeons, dermatologist’s offices and medispas. The procedure is safely performed by using a No. 10 surgical steel blade. The blade is held against the skin at a 45-degree angle and stroked gently against the skin surface just like shaving. However, always make sure that while you work out you wear clothing manufactured from light linen or cotton and other natural fibers. These will let your skin breathe. Synthetic materials like lycra or NClon traps your sweat and triggers bacterial activity that aggravates acne problems. While you dry your skin with a towel during exercise, dab the towel on your skin to remove the sweat instead of rubbing. What are the different types of chemical peels?

Chemical peels are broadly defined by the depth of damage in the skin that they produce. They are categorized as superficial, medium, and deep. Superficial peels do not damage skin below the epidermis, the most superficial skin layer. Medium peels may reach to the superficial layer of the dermis, the deeper layer of the skin. Deep peels generally reach the deeper layers of the dermis. The depth of damage depends on the nature and concentration of the chemicals in the peeling solution and the length of time they are permitted to interact with the skin. Popular chemicals in peeling solutions include retinoids (tretinoin dissolved in propylene glycol), alpha-hydroxy acids (lactic acid and glycolic acid), beta-hydroxy acids (salicylic acid), trichloroacetic acid, and phenol (carbolic acid). Jessner’s solution, a combination of resorcinol (14 g), salicylic acid (14 g), and lactic acid (85%) in ethanol (95%), is also an excellent peeling agent.

How are Chemical Peels used?
Chemical Peels are used to minimize fine wrinkling on the face and neck, to even out the skin tone & texture and to reduce the appearance of sun damage.

What can I expect?
Most of our chemical peels are performed by our skin care specialists. It takes less than 20 to 30 minutes and requires no downtime.
