Microdermabrasion is a simple and non-invasive technique utilizing a machine that produces an even flow of crystals across the skin. The crystals can be aluminium oxide, organic, or make of baking soda. As the crystals flow across the epidermis, the machine also “vacuums” the skin and stimulates blood flow. The upper layer of the epidermis is gently exfoliated, leaving it smooth and fresh feeling. Dead skin cells on the surface of the epidermis are removed, promoting a more youthful glow. Microdermabrasion is usually performed by a physician, nurse, or licensed skin care specialist also called an esthetician. The first microdermabrasion machine was produced in the United States in 1997. It has since become a staple in skin care clinics, day spas, medi-spas, and physician’s offices.
As we age, cell renewal slows down and skin has less elasticity and collagen. Wrinkles and sagging tissue are the result. Microdermabrasion can help amplify and stimulate the cell renewal process, resulting in collagen production. More collagen equals less noticeable lines around the eyes, mouth and other areas of the face.
