In a prefect world our skin naturally sloughs off the top dead layers of cells every 4 – 6 weeks, exposing the underlying newer and healthier looking skin.
This sloughing-off process becomes disrupted with certain conditions like acne or oily skin, sun exposure, smoking, environmental pollutants, poorly nourished skin and certain skin diseases. These conditions all lead to a slower than normal sloughing-off process.
The result is skin that looks dull and coarse, have an uneven and bumpy texture, fine lines become more visible, skin looks crepey and dry and we look ‘tired’ and older than we are. As we age, our skin’s normal cell turnover rate decreases naturally (more cells die off than are created), making these signs on our skin more noticeable.
Microdermabrasion is a non-invasive, mechanical exfoliation treatment. It is an in- office procedures performed by a trained Technician. A diamond tip is used to gently loosen dead cells on the skin’s surface along with a vacuum suction to remove theses loosened skin cells. Only the outer layers of the stratum corneum (outermost layer of skin) are removed, thus assisting the skin in its normal exfoliation process. After treatment the skin looks healthier, more even in texture, fresher and more radiant.
The Science
When the skin’s surface is disrupted in this way, cell division occurs (an increase in skin cell turnover) which stimulates fibroblast activity leading to collagen production. This in turn leads to thicker, firmer younger looking skin. The suctioning and vacuuming stimulates blood flow, which increases delivery of oxygen and nutrients to the skin’s surface, helping to nourish the dermis. Removing the dead skin will aid in the penetration of skin care products by up to 50% and makeup will go on much smoother.
Microdermabrasion treatments are recommended every 3-4 weeks in a series of 3-6 treatments for correction and every 6-8 weeks for maintenance or prevention.
Microdermabrasion can be used to decrease the effect of, and or improve the appearance of the following conditions:
Superficial uneven pigmentation (mild sun damaged skin)
Certain ‘Age Spot’” (Seborreic keratosis)
Granular, uneven looking skin (Plaques)
Rough, coarse skin texture
Dull, ‘tired looking’ skin
Enlarged pores with oily build-up
Fine lines and small wrinkles
Clients who smoke
After sun tanning episodes
Having it Done:
Before Microdermabrasion we recommend our clients book a free Skin Care Consultation with one of Hummingbird’s trained Technicians. This enables us to professionally evaluate your skin and determine if Microdermabrasion is correct for your skin. This consultation allows us to address all your skin concerns and custom make your treatment regimen.
Often other treatments like Vitamin Infusions and Chemical Peels are used in conjunction with Microdermabrasion for better results and maintenance of your skin’s health.
The complete procedure takes approximately 30-45 minutes. We start the process by doing a UV-light based analysis of the skin.
