Dermaplaning is a facial exfoliating technique that removes away the top layer of dead skin and fine, peach fuzz hairs using a surgical scalpel. The procedure is quick, easy, and requires no healing or post-treatment. Although similar to a microdermabrasion or chemical peel which remove dead skin cells, dermaplaning has the added benefit of removing the fine hairs that grow on the face.
Yes! Dermaplaning is effective for most people, especially those unable to have a chemical peel due to adverse conditions like dark or tanned skin, and pregnancy or lactation. Mature skin can also benefit from the procedure, as cell regeneration slows down during aging. Rough and dry skin can be treated, as well as simple acne scarring or discoloration. However, if your skin is prone to inflammatory conditions, you may want to avoid it. Oily skin, acne, and thick facial hair are also deterrents for the procedure.
Shaving does not yield the same result as dermaplaning, as it does not remove the dead skin cells. As such, do not attempt the procedure without a trained professional.
The procedure can take less than an hour, depending on the patient. Your face will be cleansed, and then a surgical scalpel is held by the professional at an angle and used in a downward, scraping motion. The procedure is painless.
As with chemical peels or microdermabrasion, your skin will be sensitive to sun exposure after treatment. However, the procedure does not require any downtime or aftercare besides your normal skin care regimen. The procedure comes with a small chance or redness or irritation, although it is not common. Results usually last up to two weeks and can be repeated as often as needed.
