Correct acne treatment represents the only way to prevent the formation of acne scars. After the acne lesions heal, hyper-pigmentation marks and redness may appear on the skin. These are not the same with scars, as they actually represent post-inflammatory changes in the tissues. Hyper-pigmentation is normal for the natural healing and remodeling process that the skin goes through. Normally, full recovery is achieved within 6-12 months. And if no acne lesions develop in that area, the risk of scarring remains very low.
TEMPORARY ACNE SCARS
Avoid sun exposure because UV radiation slows down the healing process and aggravates skin damage. Make sure you wear a good sunscreen.
Some people use tretinoin (a naturally occurring form of vitamin A) to help heal the post-inflammatory changes of acne. With products like Avita, Renova or Retin-A, you can speed up the skin’s remodeling process.
Other pharmaceutical formulations that prevent the formation of acne scars use Alpha and Beta hydroxy acids as main ingredients. The acids have to be used in the right concentrations and with a pH that matches the pH of the skin.
Don’t pick at scabs because they protect the healing process that goes on in the deeper layers of the dermis. The chance of scarring increases if scabs are pulled before they naturally peel off.
PERMANENT ACNE SCARS
The definition of acne scars applies to skin defects that remain on the skin for more than a year after the healing of the lesion. There are three main types of permanent acne scars, and the reason we refer to them right now is because treatment varies depending on the type of scars affecting the patient.
ICEPICK ACNE SCARS are narrow and sharp, giving the skin a look like it’s been punctured. Resurfacing treatments are seldom efficient for icepick scars because they are too deep for such procedures to work.
BOXCAR ACNE SCARS look like round or oval depressions with sharp vertical edges. Depending on the depth of the boxcar acne scars, they may be treated with regular resurfacing techniques or with full-thickness treatments.
ROLLING ACNE SCARS give the skin an undulating appearance, hence the name ‘rolling’. Such lesions can only be corrected by breaking the subcutaneous fibrous bands responsible for the look. Therefore, resurfacing techniques won’t work on this kind of acne scars.
Talk to the doctor for complete diagnosis and analysis of your skin condition. Only after a consultation with the specialist can you evaluate the specifics of your situation, and make a decision for the treatment.
