For those who’d like to improve the tone of their face, but aren’t ready to undergo cosmetic surgery, a procedure like microdermabrasion may be the perfect option! Learn more about this less invasive alternative, and whether it is right for you.
There are many cosmetic surgery options to improve your facial skin’s tautness, and remove wrinkles that begin to form around the eyes, nose and mouth. However, if you’d rather put off surgery as long as possible, you can talk to your surgeon about a microdermabrasion treatment.
Microdermabrasion utilizes many different materials to remove the top layer of skin. Your doctor will help decide which method is best for your skin type. Some options utilize abrasive crystals and vacuum suction which gently and completely remove the superficial layer of dead skin that covers your face. For sensitive or dry skin, creams filled with abrasive particles may be rubbed onto the face to remove the dead skin. The skin particles are rinsed away in the cream after treatment is complete. Your physician may recommend combining microdermabrasion with another non-surgical technique known as a chemical peel to get the best results.
Blemishes found on the first layer of skin may successfully be removed or reduced within one microdermabrasion treatment. These blemishes include age spots, brown spots, and perhaps even fine lines. Those who have experienced acne scarring may also find that a treatment will reduce those spots, as well as close enlarged pores and get rid of current acne.
Another advantage is the stimulation of collagen. Patients often find the texture of their skin improves immediately after treatment, feeling smoother and softer.
Unlike cosmetic surgery, this treatment takes up to 30 minutes to complete, and doesn’t require any anesthesia and very little recovery time. It’s also safe for just about anyone. Some skin conditions that may prevent you from treatment include active acne or rosacea, herpes lesions, dermatitis, psoriasis, open sores or lesions, active eczema or lupus and those who are taken certain medications.
During the procedure, you’ll probably feel a light scratching across the area of treatment, but most patients actually find this to be rather pleasant. Once the scratching is finished, the treatment begins to feel like a massage created by the mild vibrating of the instruments. Right after your session, your skin will feel instantly tighter and smoother.
There are few side effects, however. Your skin will be more sensitive to the sun’s rays, so it’s a good idea to use sunscreen for a few days after treatment. Your face may become swollen and red for a few hours after the procedure, but this should subside after 24 hours. Also, you may experience some bruising from the suction. This may last several days, but does not necessarily occur with every treatment.
Unlike cosmetic surgery, microdermabrasion treatments require little recovery time. Applying a sunscreen is necessary to protect the newly revealed skin from burning in the sun’s rays. You’ll also find that applying moisturizer on a regular basis will help to alleviate any dryness or temporary discomfort that may occur. Moisturizer will also allow the new skin to keep its supple texture for an extended period of time. Your physician will advise you if any other steps need to be taken.
